Vitamins & Minerals

Vitamins and Minerals are essential to life. Both act as co-enzymes and enable the body to quickly and accurately perform its activities. Vitamins and minerals contribute to good health by regulating our body metabolism and assisting in biochemical processes that releases energy from food. They are considered micro-nutrients because the body needs them in relatively small amounts compared to macro-nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and water.

Enzymes are essential compounds that are the foundation of human bodily functions. They are the catalysts in the chemical reactions that are continually taking place within the body. Vitamins and minerals work with these enzymes as coenzymes, thereby assisting in and directing all the activities that occur in the body to happen quickly and accurately.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic micro-nutrients that act like spark plugs in the body, keeping it "tuned up" and functioning at high performance. But you can't live on vitamins. They're not pep pills or substitutes for food. They are not the components of body structure. They stimulate, but do not act as, nutritional fuel. As catalysts, they work on the cellular level, often as co-enzymes, regulating body metabolic processes through enzyme activity, to convert proteins and carbohydrates to tissue and energy. Notwithstanding their minute size and amount in the body, vitamins are absolutely necessary for our "growth, vitality, and healthy aging." Even small deficiencies can endanger the whole body. Unfortunately, it takes weeks or months for signs of some deficiencies to appear as the body uses up its supply, even then a problem is often hard to pinpoint, because the cells usually continue to function at less efficiency until they receive proper nourishment or suffer irreversible damage.

Vitamins are divided into two major groups: water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins are needed by our bodies on a daily, almost continual basis because the body cannot store them for any appreciable time and excesses are excreted. This group includes Vitamin C and B Complex vitamins (excepting B12, which can be stored in the liver, kidneys, heart, and bone marrow). The oil soluble vitamins are different. They can be stored in the liver & fatty tissues of the body for varying periods of time and are not needed on a daily basis as long as the proper amounts are present in the diet on a somewhat fairly regular basis. This group would include vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Vitamins are organic substances (a substance that contains carbon) normally found in most foods. While raw fruits and vegetables are the best sources of many vitamins, smaller amounts of vitamins can be found in cooked and processed foods. However, some vitamins are nearly totally destroyed in processing and cooking.

Minerals

Minerals and trace minerals are the building blocks of all life. They are the most basic of nutrients, the bonding agents between your body and food. Minerals work with the body's enzymes to convert the food we eat into a usable energy source for all metabolic functions. They are especially necessary for athletes and active people, because you must have minerals for all strenuous activity. All the minerals together, comprise only about 4% of the body weight, but they are responsible for major areas of human health. Minerals keep the body pH balanced - not alkaline, not acid. They are essential to bone formation, and the digestion of food. They regulate the osmosis of cellular fluids, electrical activity in the nervous system, and most metabolic functions. They help transport oxygen through the system, govern heart rhythm, help you sleep, and are principle factors in mental and emotional balance. Trace minerals are only .01% of body weight, but deficiencies in even these micro-nutrients can contribute to severe depression, hyperactivity in children, sugar imbalances, (hypoglycemia & diabetes), nerve and stress conditions, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, premature aging of skin and hair, memory loss, and the inability to heal quickly.

Unlike some vitamins, minerals cannot be synthesized by the body, and must be regularly obtained, in complete form, through our food, drink, or mineral baths.

Minerals are divided into two major groups: macro-minerals and micro-minerals. Macro-minerals are needed by the body in larger, more bulky amounts normally measured in milligrams (mg). These minerals include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, chloride, and silicon. Micro-minerals are needed by the body in small amounts normally measured in micrograms (mcg). Micro-minerals include chromium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, vanadium and zinc.

Balance, the Phenomenon We Call "Synergy"

Just as the macro-nutrients of a diet should be balanced for optimum effects and health, so should the micro-nutrients. Researchers have found that an excess of a vitamin or mineral can lead to some of the same symptoms as a deficiency of that vitamin or mineral, or to a deficiency in some other nutrient. Sometimes taking a single vitamin or mineral can be very beneficial, as in the case of vitamin C curing or preventing scurvy. But remember, nutrients pull you toward optimum health like a chain. All nutrients (links) in the nutritional chain must be present and balanced for optimum health.

Chelation: what is it and why is it important?

Chelation of the mineral must take place in an aqueous (liquid) environment. The chelating agent (ligand) must bond to the mineral by at least two points on the ligand to form a ring with the mineral as the closing member of the ring. Only then is a chelate formed. Ascorbates, citrates, and gluconates have no value as nutritional chelates, and in fact, are only about as bioavailable as mineral salts. Some chelating agents, like picolinic acid and EDTA are strong chelators, but are not metabolized by the body. Krebs Cycle chelates are a popular concept, but their usefulness is highly suspect.

In forming a proper mineral chelate, the mineral and the amino acid must be in solution, and a chemical reaction must occur. Simply mixing minerals with a soggy protein, or dry blending them with an insoluble protein, will not form a chelate. Unfortunately, many cheaply made so called "chelates" have been sold to the public.

A nutritionally functional chelate must be strong enough to resist destruction in the gastrointestinal system, yet allow its mineral content to be released for use inside the body. Presently, this unique type of chelate can only be prepared in one way, the manufacturing method is patented by Albion Laboratories. If it says Albion, you know it's the real chelate.

A nutritionally functional chelate must also have a molecular weight that is small enough to allow intact absorption through the intestinal wall. To do so, it must have a molecular weight of less than 800 daltons. Any chelate weighing over 800 daltons requires digestion of the chelate in order to be absorbed, and digestion will destroy that chelate. In laboratory tests, only one manufacturer, Albion Laboratories, was found to produce a mineral amino acid chelate weighing less than 800 daltons. This small molecular weight chelate is described and protected in the Albion Laboratory patents.
