Omega-3 & Omega-6

Smooth and almond shaped, the tiny flax seed is a miracle factory of nutritional substances. Often referred to as "nutritional gold", flax oil is being hailed as the latest in the fight to preserve optimum health by plant biochemists and health researchers all over the world.

What makes this oil so extraordinary? During the last two decades research scientists have now uncovered components of flax oil which offer enormous nutritional benefits. A real power house, this oil packs a triple whammy: (1) a high-dose of Alpha-linolenic Acid (LNA, Omega-3 fatty acid), a healthy fat which helps lower cholesterol, (2) a proper ratio of Linoleic Acid (LA, Omega-6 fatty acid), the other "essential", but more abundant healthy fat, and (3) Lignans, a kind of fiber that acts to stimulate the protective biological responses to many degenerative diseases.

Our bodies do a remarkable job of creating most of the nutrients we need from resident cell materials on hand. The nutrients our bodies can't synthesize are called the "essential nutrients", and these must be adequately supplied in our diets. Of the some 45 essential nutrients, two are fatty acids: LNA and LA.

Essential fatty acids (EFA's) are part of every cell in our bodies where they play important roles in maintaining the structure of our cells and in producing energy. Our glands need essential fatty acids to carry out the minute secretion of hormones and other biological regulating substances which affect every function in our body.

Lignins, while technically not essential, must still come from our diet. Lignin is an insoluble fiber which our bodies convert to several kinds of lignans. The lignans formed from flax oil are "pseudo estrogens" that block estrogen receptors in the body. The molecular shape of lignans are such that they bind with the estrogen receptors in the body, thus smoothing out the hormonal and metabolic effect of estrogen released in the body. A potent cancer-causing hormone, estrogen can, when over-produced, stimulate colon and other forms of cancer. It is also significant to note that the rates of colon cancer tend to correlate with those of breast cancer, and that both seem to be high in people with low-fiber diets. The presence of lignans, derived from plant fiber, may be one of the main reasons why vegetarians have substantially lower cancer rates than meat eaters.

The Modern Diet and LNA Deficiency

In the past 100 years, modern food processing developments have drastically reduced the nutrient value, including the LNA content, of most of the foods we eat. Not only do Americans get vastly insufficient amounts of beneficial LNA, most of the oils that are consumed are highly saturated and/or heat altered "trans-fatty acids." Studies have shown trans-fats to be far worse health risks than even saturated fats. What are the products most responsible for the estimated 12 grams (.43 ounces) of trans-fatty acids Americans consume every day? The main culprits are deep-fried foods (french fries, onion rings, etc.), margarines, shortenings, and shortening oils, all made from partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils. Consequently, Americans suffer some of the highest rates of degenerative processes in the world, like heart attacks, cancer, arthritis, stroke, kidney impairment, liver disease, autoimmune disorders, and skin disorders.

The Proven Benefits of LNA

In the last ten years, numerous scientific studies have been released on flaxseed and its nutritionally valuable oil. At a recent conference at the Flax Institute of the United States in Fargo, ND, scientists focused on flax and flax oil and its role in healing and preventing numerous degenerative diseases. Clinical research experience demonstrate the following benefits from consuming flax seed and/or oil:

  • For over thirty-five years, world-renowned, German lipid researcher Johanna Budwig has been using flax oil successfully to restore proper metabolic functions in more than 1,000 documented cases.

  • In his New York City clinic, now-deceased Max Gerson, MD, treated heart patients with organic flax oil for its cholesterol-lowering ability. His work showed that LNA lowered high blood cholesterol and triglycerides levels from an average of 25 percent in some patients to as much as 65 percent in others.

  • At the Department of Clinical Chemistry in Denmark, Professor H. O. Bang conducted studies on cardiovascular stress in populations with high animal fat diets. Interestingly, populations like those of the Greenland Eskimos, who consumed high LNA diets from ocean fish and cetaceans (whales & sea mammals), had only three cases of heart trouble among a population of 2,400 people studied over a four year period. Two of those cases involved people over 78 years old, and the other case was complicated with rheumatic fever.

  • Pedigree show animals are fed linseed oil, made from flaxseed, to keep their coats glossy. Along the same lines, recent research has shown that certain skin conditions in humans have improved dramatically when flax oil is consumed. These skin conditions are exacerbated from lack of EFA's in the diet. You will see that your skin gets smoother, softer, and velvety from taking flax oil regularly in your diet. It's also helpful for treating dry skin, dandruff, and sun-sensitive skin.

  • Most common physical causes of impotency in men and non-orgasmic response in women is blockage of blood flow in the arteries of the pelvis. Decrease of blood flow can prevent full expansion (erection) of the penis and/or the clitoris. Thus ejaculation and/or orgasm cannot occur. The solution is to unblock narrowed arteries in general, and the consumption of flax oil will aid one's body in doing that.

  • One of the most noticeable signs of improved health from the use of flax oil is the progressive and increased vitality and energy. Athletes notice that their fatigued muscles recover from exercise more quickly. LNA also increases stamina. Flax generates a healing "heat energy" in the body due to the fatty acids that are burned up for energy production. This vital energy is enormous and attributed to the double bonds in the flax molecule which make them responsible for speeding up most bio-chemical processes. In simple terms, flax oil increases metabolic rate and the efficiency of cellular energy production. It can stimulate respiratory and cellular oxidation by which energy is produced and we experience this sensation as warmth. For anyone wishing to reduce fat to create a fit, lean body, this is great news!!!
The Delicate Flax Oil

Producing an oil from flax seed without damaging or destroying the vital essential fatty acids is no simple task. As essential as linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic (LNA) acids are to our health, they are also very temperamental and easily destroyed by light, air, and heat.

Syntra-Link is processed from certified, organically-grown flax seed. This seed is cold pressed with temperatures never exceeding 96° and processed in an environment totally free of light and oxygen. The essential fatty acid and nutrient rich oil is then packaged in opaque, carob-coated capsules and sealed in black bottles to protect against spoilage due to light or oxygen. With this type of care in processing and packaging, Syntra-Link will remain fresh and nutritious for well over a year.
